Museum Collections and Funds Department
Professional
and scientific work in the Historical Museum of Serbia is carried out through
four departments of the Division of Primary Protection. Connected with each
other, the departments undertake diverse tasks in order to collect,
preserve, interpret and exhibit museum objects within its collections.
This
department is basic one in the Museum and consists of two units: one
dealing with the collections within its competence, and the other one,
dealing with the collections outside its competence. Both units employ
historians, art historians, archeologists and ethnologists. Museum experts
are engaged in systematical filling up of the collections, their
preservation and identification, as well as in their interpreting,
presentation and publication through temporary exhibitions and various
issues. Apart from this, the curators perform researches in other
scientific and professional institutions, archives and museums; they also
work on sites, in order to find materials needed for studying certain
periods of Serbian history and their further use as museum displays.
Particular
aspect of work can be recognized in archeological and architectural
researches. Independent archeological excavations the Museum carried out on
the Avar necropolis in Mali Idjos, and, in cooperation with other
institutions, on sites near Stari (Old) Ras, in Backo Petrovo Selo, and
nearby Kladovo.
For
their almost half-of-century-long activity, the Museum experts collected a
lot of objects of outstanding importance for Serbian history, which were
evaluated as indispensable in representing social-political, economic, cultural,
educational and other aspects of life of the Serbs and their state from
their settlement in the Balkans up the present.
Their
work and results of their researches, the Museum experts present on
temporary exhibitions, the number of which exceeds one hundred, and which
were great success not only in Serbia but also abroad, as well as in the Review of the Historical Museum
of Serbia and catalogues of collections and exhibitions.
